Online EMDR Therapy UK

For clients outside Birmingham, or who simply prefer to work from home, EMDR therapy is available online across the UK: assessed for suitability in the same way as in-person work.

How Online EMDR Works

Online EMDR follows the same structure as face-to-face sessions: assessment, stabilisation, trauma processing and integration, delivered over a secure video call rather than in a therapy room. The bilateral stimulation that EMDR uses (traditionally guided eye movements) is adapted for a screen. In practice this often means following an on-screen moving target, tapping alternately on your own knees or shoulders (sometimes called "butterfly tapping"), or using auditory tones through headphones. Which method suits you best is discussed during your assessment rather than decided in advance.

What Online Sessions Require

A stable internet connection and a private space where you won't be interrupted matter more than any particular piece of technology. Most clients use a laptop or tablet propped at a distance that keeps their hands and upper body visible, since some of the adaptations above rely on being able to see them. Headphones are useful if auditory tones are used, and if you're likely to be at home with family or housemates, it's worth thinking in advance about where you can have privacy for the full session.

Privacy and Environment

Trauma processing can bring up strong feelings, and having somewhere you feel safe to experience that (without needing to compose yourself for someone walking in) is part of what makes online work suitable or not for a given person. This is discussed directly at assessment: not everyone has that kind of space available consistently, and that's a legitimate reason online therapy might not be the right fit, at least for now.

When Online EMDR May Not Be the Right Approach

Online EMDR isn't automatically appropriate for everyone. Some people process trauma more safely with a therapist physically present, particularly where dissociation, significant instability, or safety concerns are part of the picture. Others simply find it harder to feel settled enough on a screen for the work to be effective. Where this applies, in-person sessions in Birmingham may be recommended instead, or online work may be considered again later once other groundwork is in place. This is exactly what the assessment is for.

Suitability Is Assessed, Not Assumed

Whether online EMDR is appropriate for you is one of the things considered during the Comprehensive Psychological Needs & EMDR Suitability Assessment, alongside your wider circumstances, history and treatment goals. It isn't offered as a default simply because it's convenient: the same clinical judgement applies as it would for an in-person referral.

Booking process All appointment times are confirmed manually within 48 hours to support safe and professionally contained therapy. This structured process allows careful screening for suitability and appropriate therapeutic pacing.
